High street chains and supermarkets are becoming evermore popular, offering a wide range of goods and competitive prices on products. However, Cardiff is home to some fantastic independent businesses, many of which can be found in its quirky arcades. It is actually known as “the city of arcades” due to the highest concentration of Victorian, Edwardian and contemporary arcades in any British city. All under cover, they offer the perfect shelter this time of year from wintry showers. We have selected a few of our favourite stores to feature in this weeks “In the Loop”.
First up is Spillers Records. Situated in the Morgan Arcade, Spillers was founded in 1894 by Henry Spiller, and is the oldest record shop in the world! Not only does this unique store educate people on the “classics”, but it also keeps music lovers informed on the current music scene too. You will always receive a warm welcome here, and can browse magazines or check out gig listings. Keep updated and follow them on Twitter @spillerrecords
For those of you who are foodies, take a stroll to Royal Arcade and check out Wally’s Delicatessen. This is a must visit store for any trip to Cardiff. With a 3 metre long walkaround olive bar, loose teas, store-baked artisan breads and Italian Gelati, the quality of produce here is second to none. Pop in store before Christmas, and pick up your Panettone or Turkish Delight! They also host events such as beer tasting and whisky tasting at their liquor cellar. Follow them @wallysdeli on Facebook to keep in touch with all their latest news.
Nestled in the Castle Arcade, you will find Troutmark Books, who are confident that after one visit, you will be hooked! This quirky second-hand bookshop stocks all manner of books from first editions, to comics and annuals. There are even tables and chairs for you to sit comfortably and peruse the goods. Follow them on Twitter @TroutmarkBooks
Lastly, again housed in Castle Arcade, you will find Castle Welsh Crafts. This independent gift shop is a family run business founded over 35 years ago, and has an extensive range of gifts and mementos of Wales. Why not purchase a Welsh Lovespoon? Traditionally given as a gift during the 17th century to a woman from her gentleman admirer, these are now popular as a special gift with love from Wales. You can find Castle Welsh Crafts directly opposite Cardiff Castle – Stop 1 on our bus tour!
